SOME FAMILY FRIENDLY CYCLE PATHS

If you would like to explore the Côte d’Azur from a different angle, whilst amusing the children and getting some exercise, take to your bikes!

Thanks to the area’s many natural parks and beautiful country side and to the greater awareness of thecycle path promenade des anglais nice need for ecological transport, supported by the county council and some of its towns, a vast network of cycle tracks has been constructed over the past years.

Many of these are adapted to families with children of all ages and lead you along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, through typical villages or along shaded tracks in Provencal forests.

Family First has researched and tested out some cycle paths suitable for children:

ALPES MARITIMES CYCLE PLAN 2005-2015

Created in collaboration with the county’s institutions, groups and the public, the 2005-2015 cycle plan concentrated on 2 major themes:

  • The creation of safe cycle paths to encourage people to use their bikes to get from one place tobike rides for families another instead of the car.
  • The creation of tourist bike routes, for holiday makers and locals.

Projects:

  • A continuous network of 278 km of safe and homogenous cycle paths.
  • A network of 28 tourist cycle paths and some for experienced riders.
  • Cycle paths in all of the national parks to offer some far from the road.
  • Bike facilities in high schools to encourage students to ride to school.
  • By 2015 the aim is to have created a cycle network leading mainly along the coast, through the Var, Sophia Antipolis and the valleys of the rivers Paillon, Saigne, and Var.

  • Rules, regulations & facts:

  1. Young bike riders are particularly at risk from 10 to 14 years, when they start to use bikes on or near to roads without an adult.
  2. Before the age of 10 years children find it hard to understand the difference between safe areas to play and ride and those that are dangerous.
  3. When riding on a road bikes must have front and back brakes and have a light on them and florescent patches (white or yellow in front, red behind, orange on the sides and on the pedals, and a bell. If your bike is not correctly equipped a police man may ask you to stop riding.
  4. Children under the age of 8 years may ride on pavements (unless there is a specific rule made by a specific local authority) and bikes may be hand held.

  1. Do not let children under the age of 10 to 12 years ride alone on the road, even if it is not busy.
  2. Until your child reaches this age try to ride with him/her and help him/her to understand the rules of the road.
  3. Make sure that your child is able to put the rules learnt into practice to avoid the dangers of the road.
  4. Do not forget the helmet!
