Présentation

DESCRIPTION : LE VILLAGE DES TORTUES (TORTOISE VILLAGE)

Le village des tortues (Tortoise village) is an animal park situated at the foot of the “massif des maures”, in the heart of the Provencal swamp land and country side. Its 3 hectares are open for the public to come and admire and learn more about tortoises in their natural habitat, especially the Hermann species which is the most endangered reptile in France.

The village studies, houses and protects tortoises with the aim to save some of the endangered species. More than 2500 tortoises are bred and looked here before being put back into their natural habitat.

The village and its tortoise hospital make the headquarters of the non profit making organisation called SOPTOM, whose aim is to study and protect tortoises and their natural habitat. It has 800 members and 12 000 people who have chosen to adopt a tortoise.

The park’s visitors may observe these friendly little creatures by following a path with bridges that leads over swamp and wood land. Volunteers are on hand to give you information and answer questions throughout your visit. You can also visit the tortoise hospital and nursery.

The village is a great venue for a fun and educational family day out with the children.

Why not join the 12 000 others who have chosen to adopt a tortoise? You’ll leave it in its natural habitat but will be able to name it and follow its progression and you may even become an eco-volunteer!
